If time permits, transfer into an open jeep for a safari across Minneriya's grasslands and reservoir edge, where herds of wild elephants — sometimes 100-strong in season — gather to graze and bathe as the light turns gold.

En route into Nuwara Eliya, an optional stop at a working tea factory — from leaf to cup — followed by a tasting of estate-fresh Ceylon tea. Recommended as a natural break in the drive up from Kandy.

A short drive out of town to one of Sri Lanka's most storied shrines — built, local tradition holds, at the very spot where Sita was kept captive in the Ramayana. Set beside a rushing stream with the Hakgala hills rising behind, it's a quietly moving stop rather than a crowded one.

Perched some 5,400 feet above sea level and established in 1862, Hakgala's roses, orchids, ferns, and towering trees make for an unhurried stroll — and, by Ramayana legend, this was once part of King Ravana's pleasure gardens.

One of Nuwara Eliya's finest lookout points, with panoramic views over the surrounding mountains, valleys, tea estates, and the town below — a rewarding stop for photography if the group has the energy for one more.
